Petro Urges Latin American Unity, Condemns US Action in Venezuela

(MENAFN) Colombian President Gustavo Petro urged nations across Latin America to come together, criticizing recent U.S. military measures in Venezuela.

He delivered these remarks during the opening session of a regional economic forum for Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Panama.

Although he did not explicitly name the United States, Petro alluded to the recent attack on Venezuela, stating: “We do not want Caracas or any country in the Americas to be targeted with missiles, neither from the north nor from the south.”

He emphasized the shared history of the region, adding: "Our peoples have shaped history in such a way that we should begin to see ourselves as a Latin American and Caribbean civilization -- diverse, extremely different, yet interconnected."

Highlighting pressing international issues, Petro argued that only through regional cooperation can Latin American nations address challenges such as drug trafficking, climate change, and growing conflicts.

Pointing out that true strength lies not in weaponry or wealth, he said: “True wealth lies in life, in nature, in cultural diversity, and in the search to offer the world a peaceful alternative instead of war. Will we agree to be fragmented and isolated, or will we build a genuine unity?”

The forum drew leaders from Brazil, Panama, Bolivia, Jamaica, Ecuador, and Guatemala, as well as the incoming presidents of Colombia and Chile.
